Kahn Academy offers a very clear statement of what Type1 diabetes is.

I wasn't aware of how the body moves between an absorptive and
post-absorptive state; this was helpful to me. It also taught me that
there is always a basal amount of insulin in the blood, and that is what
taking long-acting insulin replicates.
