 I'm not sure using the alpha channel to lighten elements on a 

Matplotlib plot is the best idea. Below, we're doing this, but the

minute we decide for a colored background, the shade of our bars

changes. That's because the alpha channel lessens opacity, makes

the figure partly transparent. With predictable outcomes on a white
