Elastin

Transcription errors. That is the big boogeyman of aging,
as our cells start to make errors after x rounds of self
reproduction.

One can well imagine this could be at work with collagen
and elastin. As one digs into academic treatment of what
collagen is,  the big thing about it is that solidity is produced
wholly by structure (regardless of environment). Elastin, on the
other hand, coils like a spring and gets mechanically stretched;
what makes it coil back? The play of hydrophobic and hydrophilic
amino acids in the sequence ie how it moves in a liquid environment.

In both cases, make a mistake, or fail to hydrate or nourish at the
right time and disaster can strike. That is essentially the story with stretch
marks, which are scar tissue deposited because things happened too fast.
