Outside

It's -10 C outside, and I'm about to go out; it
was freezing point yesterday, so that will be a big difference.
Once one is in sub-freezing range, it is never easy.

Had a tomato sandwich - on health bread - with mayo for breakfast.
There is fiber, and then there is fiber. Soluble fiber, like the
tomato, slows things down and give a feeling of fullness.
The health bread is insoluble, and speeds things up. (But then
vegetable skins tend to be insoluble, and white bread would be soluble).
Food tracking apps don't make the difference.

I will be sorely tempted to retreat to the Tim's next to
the grocery store when I get there. For a double, double,
and I'm not talking about coffee. Need to stay strong!!
Besides, there is sun today and we haven't seen the sun
in weeks. Not kidding about this either, the warm weather
up to now has made this winter a grey tunnel. Out I go.

Suspects

source: Radio-Canada

Hard to know what prompted that attack on a Quebec City mosque.
CBC reported the suspects were Laval University students, one of
whom possibly Moroccan.

Quebec City newspaper confirms the two were students. One lived close
to the Mosque.

The identity of the two suspects is known. Too early to specify motive,
according to authorities.

Sticking Point

Currently going without pain meds (since 2 pm yesterday) and feeling
rather decent. Good to know my actual status. I will take some again,
when I venture forth outdoors. This is my big fear, falling again or bumping
into someone or something in a store.

The storm was a fizz, but the ice cover makes going out impossible for now.
This has been an entirely new near freezing point winter, with quick freeze-thaw
alternate days. And no sun. I'm not really depressed, just disoriented. Been wearing
summer Ts and tanks under sweaters with jeans. Not really yearning to escape
to warmer climes: there are storms there as well.

There is no turning back climate change, only going forward and adapting.
Which, incidentally, is the verbal sticking point between proponents and denyers.
We need to change how we do things, and eventually exercise some control over
climatic conditions. Forward!

Non-Newtonian

Storm day(s) for Montreal and region and MSN is going all-out
on recipes for the stay-at-home. Which is fine by me. In fact,
I learned yesterday - watching a History video - that it was common for
European peasants in earlier epochs to spend their time drinking during
the off times from agriculture...😊

Below, a recipe for Breton Far. The ingredients are those of a cake but
the proportions are tilted for more eggs and milk. It is utterly delicious.

Similar in texture, but made with cornstarch, the Flan. A mixture of water
and cornstarch actually yields a Non-Newtonian fluid i.e. one whose viscosity
varies with the strength of the forces exerted on it. There are others!!

Food Time

On the food front: I must admit some of the recipes
from this popular vlogger seem strange to me.(eg Kimchi)
But I did try putting sugar on a bite of cheese sandwich!?
The taste stayed with me.

Consulted the web for ideas about what to do with an unripe
avocado; someone suggested baking it in foil for 10 minutes. So that
when I was confronted with a hard one last night at dinner, I chopped
some and added it to the fried vegetables. The consistency was perfect,
although the taste was less pronounced when warm.

Colour

Talking colour: the colour of an object is it's place on
the colour spectrum. The tonality is how much white
there is in it. Mrs Trump was wearing a pale on-trend
colour.

Indeed, unless one is hoarding textiles, what is available in any one year is
what the industry is producing.

Inauguration Day

Put on make-up with my right arm, without thinking. Should I go
cami shopping?

Made Indian Pudding last night. The portions are those of hot cereal.
Recommended to eat with cream, ice cream or yogurt...

Below, a version with less milk, but also without wheat flour;
for purists...

Just Fine

Rv

The new packaging on Ryvita crackers is awesome: no more
sesame crumbs here and there.

Bought these at the non-sale price of 3.50$ CD at a Super C, which is their
on-line price. I don't eat them that often, but I really enjoy them when I do.

Better

It's - 17° C this morning, but oddly, there is no snow on the ground
because of weeklong rains. Strange weather.

One month after my fall, and the swelling and discolouration are abating. Not entirely
recovered but a lot better. Thankful that I am going to get through this...

My hair has been growing like crazy from all he protein I've been eating. Even
had green lentils last night, which are filling if a little bland. Added pickles to a
mayo veg salad (known as Russian salad) which helped. Been reading up about
garam masala - the wisdom of another culture - although it turns out Canada is a
major producer of pulses. Who knew.

It's going to get warm again next week, but I need to go out today because I'm low
on pain killers. Down to three times per day from four, but I'm insecure about supplies.

The absolute best thing for my arm is soaking in a warm bath. Will be trying
a whole shoulder soak next.

Interested to consider paresthesia, a feeling of numbness or tingling
considered unpleasant but not painful: the pins and needles
of a limb 'falling asleep' This was the dominant feeling in my arm
over the last month, and what is lifting as the swelling and discolouration
go down. It is the result of a pinched nerve.

On

I've been putting up with a missing browsing history
on Microsoft Edge for some time now. A charitable soul
from the French language Microsoft community just
gave me the solution.

Essayez une réparation des fichiers Windows endommagés, en exécutant les commandes suivantes :
  1. Appuyez sur les deux touches Windows + X, cliquez sur Invite de commandes (admin).
  2. Tapez les commandes suivantes. Appuyez sur Entrée après chaque commande.
  • Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  • Sfc /scannow
Notez le message que vous avez à la fin de l'exécution de ces commandes.st
Ran the first command suggested as an administrator, and once this
was 100% complete, browsing history was back on.

Merci, merci.

Dayuse

Was thinking that there is something very inhuman about
an 11 hour airplane flight, which is was Europe to Los Angeles
clocks in at. I've done Paris Montreal, and Montreal L.A. on
quite separate trips and even that is draining. It's the forced inactivity,
coupled with the food and drink. Sleeping in a chair isn't that5
grand either. Of course, for a price, one can get a premium
experience but only the few will ever use that service.

An interesting twist might be to offer flights with integrated
sleep and rest pauses. For example, someone going to L.A. might
take a break  Montreal as part of the flight package. Already, in France,
one can rent a luxury hotel room for day use at deep discount.
People are resting up and exercising before business meetings.

Financing

It's the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Le Figaro reports on an innovative French start-up at the show looking
for financing The product is a watch that reads the wearer's
blood sugar level from skin contact alone (with the help
of a monthly chemical pack one adds to the watch). Here for
diabetics. One can also get a pack that enables the watch to
read lactate levels, for athletes.
