History seems to be repeating itself, on this second Trump administration, with
the US imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium as a first 'move'. It does get our
attention!! So does the throw-away comment that 'Canada should become the 51st
State' and 'it's a real thing'.
The take-away, to my mind, is that we are invited to look at what is happening
in those sectors, and that the conditions under which many initial decisions in those
sectors were made may have changed. Canada is not the 51st State, and
we are free to bring up contextual issues about our broader relationsip with the US.
Indeed, it is impossible to re-negotiate without doing so.
That's it!
Oh and, 'quotas', a really nice word...We too have domestic needs and broader
relationships!!
