It has long been believed that the folks inhabiting the
palace at Versailles were...er, dirty. In point of fact, they
practiced a meticulous dry bath, with mildlyacidic cloths,
and an impeccably clean chemise was a requirement. Clean
water and baths became widespread in the 19th century.
