As summer marches on toward fall - and irrespective of
the enduring warm temperatures - the foodie Web is changing
things up: pies, bundt cakes, muffins are starting to appear, sure
signs of the new season. Gimme a break, I'm still working on my
bikini body!!
Seriously, though, I did come across something interesting on the
obesity problem. Like many, no doubt, I have come to understand the
addictive power of food, which I conflated with the sugar-insulin cycle:
this cycle pushed one to consume large untities of sugary foods to the
point where the pleasure cycle kicks in and one is hooked as surely as
with cocaine and the like...So being addicted to food comes down to being
addicted to sugar.
Not the whole story. Thanks to work on laboratory rats, it has been shown
that one can also be addicted to fat. Indeed, the rat will choose the fat feed
even if it is unpleasant to do so - with electric shocks - over standard rat fare.
The diffence being that sugar will be sought more frequently, but fat with
increasing thresholds.
Cheery, isn't it? The humble hamburger is a hard drug.
