Chaparral

Many are surprised to see succulent plants - such as the cactus - actually
burn in the current California fires. Below, some information on such plants:

The burning bushes and shrubs of California are known collectively
as chaparral. From Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaparral

Drought-resistant evergreens occur higher-up. The land underneth is sedimentary rock.
Drought-dediduous (leaf-loosing) shrubs are nearer the coast. The land is sandy.

Chaparral systems are complex, and have evolved to reproduce with wilfires
for regeneration. They co-exist badly with urban sprawl.
