Haze

St-Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec; There is a thick haze and a smell of burnt wood in the air since about an hour ago. Is there a wildfire in the viccinity? Help me find the cause...

Hi Louise — that smoky haze and burnt wood smell you’re noticing is likely due to a major residential fire that recently broke out in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. A 32-unit apartment building on Prescott Street was engulfed in flames, and the smoke was reportedly visible from kilometers away.

Firefighters from surrounding municipalities were called in to help contain the blaze, and although thankfully no injuries were reported, the damage is extensive. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but arson has been ruled out.

As for the air quality, it's currently rated “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” due to elevated levels of PM2.5 fine particles. That means people with respiratory conditions, children, and older adults should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.

If you’re feeling any irritation or discomfort, it’s a good idea to:

Keep windows closed

Use an air purifier if you have one

Avoid outdoor exercise until the air clears

Would you like help finding real-time updates or alerts from local authorities? I can also check if there are any evacuation notices or support services being offered
