Potato(3)

Today's potato adventure: thin strips of vegetables in oil, done in the oven. Looks better than it tastes: the thin parts tasted burnt and the thicker ones were limp. Need to buy a mandolin cutter, or a Cuisinart food processor. Actually, there was vagueness in my quest and I got vagueness in my results: what was I trying to make?

The sandwich and salad were fine. I have come to realize that it is dressing that turns salad into a social food: without dressing, one doesn't know when to stop. With dressing, one does.

OxyFoxy

I've been watching various youtube docs on the Oxycontin issue, something I hadn't really picked up on when it was happening. Today it is somewhat moot because there is now a new form of the drug, in a tablet that cannot be abused: Oxicontin is a time-release version of Oxicodone, a narcotic-family drug for chronic pain, and it had a brief career as a street drug.

The docs below are two quite interesting ones: the first a fascinating historical view of narcotics, the second the CBC take on the problem in Canada. The CBC doc is not as gripping as some of the US ones, but it does eventually offer a non-sensationalist version of things. Good old CBC, reliable if a little stodgy.

In a more serious vein, one does see that the CBC has a role, but needs to be better integrated with other sources of information for the whole to make sense.

The BBC, in its treatment of the obesity issue in the UK, always links back to its site and resources!!

Potato(2)

The Solitary Diner special for today: hachis Parmentier. A variant on sheperd's Pie (no mutton in these parts), a hachis is something ground, and Parmentier is the 17th century Chef who thought potatoes had a future in the diet of Europe...

The basic notion is to put mashed potatoes on top of something that has a bit of a sauce; here I had tomato as part of the vegetables so I put in some tomato paste and water. Instant sauce. Very little meat, hamburger. I have been abstinent of meat most of the summer, and it gives my skin a funny smell when I eat it.( Lol)

Catalonia Vote

WHY CATALONIA IS SEEKING INDEPENDENCE

The regional election Sunday, in Catalonia, produced an important victory for the independence movement. This region in the South-East of Spain has never been a sovereign state, but has been experiencing in the last decades an ever-increasing independence sentiment.

Catalonian nationalism appeared but of late: a republican movement opposed to the monarchy, it led to the creation of a Catalonian government, La Generalitat, in 1932. Stifled under Franco, this Generalitat is re-established in 1977 and gains the approval in 2005 by the Catalonian parliament for a projected autonomy.

Nationalist sentiment yet remains largely that of a minority until 2010. In that year, a text enlarging the autonomy of the region and recognizing the Catalonian 'nation' is rejected by the Constitutional Tribunal, in Madrid. In response, one million people demonstrated in Barcelona, an important showing, in a region that holds a population of 7.5 million. Since then, nationalism has intensified and the national holiday, the Diada again this year brought out more than one million people --even though these numbers are questioned by Madrid.

Why is this region demanding independence? Does it have the means for it?

What is the importance of Catalonia within Spain?

It is one of the most powerful and rich regions of Spain. With 16% of the population, Catalonia produces 20% of the wealth of the country. One quarter of Spanish exports left from Catalonia in 2014.

Taking in Barcelona, Catalonia possesses one of the largest commercial ports of the Mediterranean, four regional airports, a competitive pharmaceutical industry, and serves as home to large multinationals, such as the textile giant Mango. The unemployment rate, certainly high, stays lower than the national average: it was at the second trimester 19.1% of the active population, as opposed to 22.4% at the national level.

At the political and administrative level the region has, as is the case with other 'autonomous communities' (Andalusia, Canary Islands, Galicia, etc), its own parliament and government, looking after notably health, education and social services. It has as well its own police.

In terms of cultural roots, Catalonia also has its own language, Catalan, used more than Spanish (Castilian), its hymn, Els Segadors (the reapers) and its flag with red and gold stripes.

What is the independence movement asking for?

Deeply indebted, to the extent of one third of GDP, the region puts forward that it would not be running a deficit (the public deficit being 2% in 2013) if the Spanish redistribution regimen, where rich provinces give to the poor, worked more in their favour.

According to calculations from 2011 done by Generalitat, the difference between what the region is giving to Madrid through taxes and what it receives from the State is of the order of 8.5% of Catalonian GDP. A contribution refuted by the government, which advances a number less by one-half (4.3 % of GDP of the region).

Today, the region administers roughly one-half of taxes, the central authority raising the other half. What the nationalist forces want, is an adaptation of the system currently used in the Basque region: administering all taxation by creating a kind of regional unitary system and handing over amounts to Madrid as a function of services rendered by the State to Catalonia, as well as a contribution to territorial solidarity (with the less well-off regions).

Other than the fiscal question, the independence movement has cultural demands: they are against a law passed in 2012 that forced the use of Castilian in schools -- the minister of Education at the time, José Ignacio Wert, calling even to 'assimilate to Spanish' young Catalonians. A declaration which stirred bad memories to those who had known the taking of the region by Franco's forces during the Civil War and the suppression of Catalonian identity.

Why this might be complicated

Within the context of the political process, there are many obstacles on the road to Catalonia's independence: the declaration of sovereignty by Catalonia was judged unconstitutional. It goes against article 2 of the constitution (Unity of the nation and right to autonomy) which recognizes a right to autonomy for the regions but not their independence, according to the principle of the indissoluble unity of the nation.

The Constitutional Tribunal yet recognized that Catalonians had a 'right to decide' according to their 'political ideals', but won't be able to exercise it until the constitution has been revised. And this complex process needs a majority in each of the parliamentary bodies, which the independence movement does not have. The project for self-determination of Catalonia is thus for the time being illegal and unconstitutional but is still the policy pursued by Artur Mas, the president (independence movement) of the region.

Further, as is the case with Scotland, it would be difficult to say if an independent Catalonia could be part of Europe. Brussels has long put forward the notion that a region heretofore part of a member State of the European Union would automatically leave the block made up of 28 countries."A newly independent region, by the very fact of its independence, would become a country other with respect to the EU and could then become a candidate to become part of the Union", explained a spokesperson for the Brussels executive, Margaritis Schinas last week.

Lastly, a non-trivial question: where would Barça play? The champion of Spain and all other Catalonian clubs would be excluded from the Liga Espagnole in case of secession of the region.

Would secession be favourable to the region?

Natixis Bank looked at this question in an analysis published a year ago, and gives an estimate to the effect that Barcelona stands to loose a great deal, enumerating:

"Loss of its exports with application of the common customs charges and the adding on of transaction costs, risk of seeing enterprises with seats in Barcelona relocate to have access to the common market, reduction in the amounts of direct investments from abroad ( at 80% those of European entities)"

At the national level, it would be a grave risk to find itself against a boycott from the central government: half of Catalonian commerce is with the rest of Spain. The government of Catalonia has for its part published a memo on 'Commercial Relations between Catalonia and Spain', driven by less pessimistic hypotheses and concludes to an impact of only 2% on the local GDP due to a loss of exports from Catalonia to Spain.

Natixis also mentions that the question of keeping the Euro as the national currency is unresolved, which adds to the uncertainty as to the viability of a new Catalonian State. Moreover, the region is as always financially fragile: it cannot finance itself on markets and has as its sole bank Madrid.

Potato a Day

It's an overcast day, and rain is coming later today or perhaps tomorrow. I went food shopping early, and came back with ten pounds of potatoes (1.88$).  I walked the 1.2 kilometers from the store with the bag, and told myself this was the strain gaining ten pounds would put on my heart. It was considerable. Anyway, it's harvest time, and potatoes are a local product.

Ten pounds of potatoes - 4.54 kgs - with a medium potato at 150 grams, makes for 30 potatoes. I counted 32 from my bag. That's a month of potatoes. This might be a food challenge of sorts. finding 30 different ways of eating potatoes. I'll post the highlights!!

The bag:

My breakfast: (I had pancakes last night and stayed up to watch the blood moon. It was spectacular. What impressed me the most was that one could see it changing; giving one an experiential sense of living in a celestial machine. )

Salad for breakfast is something eaten in the Middle East, although the potatoes is a local twist.

While I was waiting for the show, looked up the contentious how much protein does one need. The answer is .38 grams per kilogram of weight. For safety purposes, that is doubled, so that it becomes grosso modo .38 grams per pound of weight. Below is a US government site that helps with the math. One overlooked aspect is that they say the daily figures they recommend apply on average. So that pancakes for dinner is acceptable, unless perhaps one is in training or being followed medically.

Cold Day in Heaven

There is a radiant blue sky today, and I am thankful for it. Not doubt, so are the folks for whom the week-end is special. But it is also  a cold day (10° C at 10 am), because we are over the jet stream: and we will max out at around 17° C.
Tomorrow should be warmer: high of 23 C. In fact, the last in the 20s° on the horizon. I am planning to enjoy it.

Today's breakfast before I head out. That piece of toast is thick and offers 140 calories. It contains sucrose-fructose, but is also enriched with vitamins. This is not as austere as it seems; there is a frozen pumpkin pie in the freezer, already available at the latitudes... IIFYM. The day is young.

Where am I going? No cycling, obviously. Perhaps a stop at a coffee shop for a fresh brew. No pumpkin spice surrogate for me!!

Freeze!

This year's tan is visible on the top of my hand, because I ride a bicycle. I also end up
with white eyes and a tanned lower face (from sunglasses). Not for long, we are starting
to get nighttime freeze warnings. Brrr!

Ruthless

Got the front camera on my Surface pro 2 working: it was the small matter of enabling
the driver!..

                                                         MAKE IT COFFEE!

                                            WHO NEEDS MAKEUP!?

I now have broadcast software installed and will be experimenting with it. That
presenter needs a makeover; camera is ruthless.

12:00 noon: Going for an adventure, to a Tim Hortons outside the city I have never
reached before. There is some new housing development in that area: we'll see.

I am not really a Tim's junkie, but I do appreciate their presence.

Need to be careful, leaving the bike out in the sun at high noon can cause a flat
tire soon thereafter. Climate change is so strong I once lost a new pair of walking
sandals when the rubber sole actually melted on me during a walk...
5.4 km. Late corn; no cows.

Cute

MSN called it; this year's Halloween is meant to be cute, not creepy!

VW

The problem which VW seems to be addressing with that tricky software is - we are told  in Der Spiegel - one well recognized in the industry. Hyundai and Toyota, might be also on the same wavelength. In effect, the software picks up whether the car is in a test situation, rather than stuck in traffic, and injects urea into the converter to give a cleaner reading.

Reading up on the technology, a clean diesel engine - because diesel fuel contains more soot - will eventually produce emissions that contain nitrogen compounds. The VW models reduce the NOx emission at a cost of 10% fuel economy; contrast with a BMW where the catalytic converter injects urea to render it harmless (yes, pipi). A vehicle normally carries urea in a tank, that needs to be replenished, and that feeds into the converter. It is water-based and freezes, and needs to be heated on start-up.

These advances in diesel technology really are impressive; it all boils down to customer decisions.

Qatar is one of the big losers in the drop in value of VW stock.

Spleen

The temperature is expected to plummet on Sunday, reaching 'seasonal' values: here in Southern Quebec, that means misery begins for another cycle. It is a time of reclusion, we can't just open windows anymore, or walk outside. Which brings me to baking. Made a banana and canned peaches bread to ease the transition.

I would gladly share the recipe, but I'm not sure what the precise proportions were: it's a clean-out-the-fridge moment for me at season change, and that piece of butter in the freezer went into it. And the one banana I had. And those canned peaches I was trying to get through and so forth. Tastes just fine although I didn't use up the walnuts, but kept those for salads. Threw in some cinnamon and vanilla instead. I did measure the two cups of flour, and the two eggs are straight- forward. Wasn't sure if the pear juice from the peaches was acid enough so used both baking powder and baking soda. All lifted nicely.

My cache of brown sugar is a solid block in a jar, which I only attempt for small quantities. Put it an indefinite amount of white, spleen de l'automne attack for me.

Not Starbucks quality though, which as I recall is oily and dark. Need to get to Montreal for that; our Starbucks closed this summer as well as the Target store that housed it. So it goes...

Interesting Times

I've been following the financial press in the last little while, wondering - with everyone else - whether the Fed will move beyond a zero interest rate. Below is a piece on the Chinese economy I found interesting. The argument is potent: the Chinese economy is becoming more inportant than the American.

I'm also following the American presidential build-up, as the parties search for candidates. The GOP is headed for a foreign policy debate tonight. Because militarily, the United States is the number one power.

Interesting times!

Real !?

Made a new vegetable dish for myself. Potato pancakes are a stapple of German cooking: shedded potato, onion, flour, egg.One makes little pancakes and fries them in oil; serve with applesauce in the Fall.

My version here is more Chinese in inspiration. There is no egg in it (the sandwich got the egg). I wet the mixture with half water, half soy sauce. The pancake is a bit difficult to work with , but the taste is okay. That was the purpose of soy sauce for the Chinese: to recall the taste of meat in a period when it was forbidden. In effect, soy sauce is complicated to make but releases amino acids. It gives a taste of meat which is real !?

Brows

With or without those dark brows !?

Happy BDay, Tan Luu!

On this very rainy Sunday morning, my thoughts are turning to brunch. In fact, I keep some very tasty yogurt varieties in individual serving containers in the freezer for just such occasions.

I am a bit mystified though, to find that the higher fat variety (below, the strawberry 6% fat) freezes like an ice cube, while the lower fat (lemon at 2.9% and probiotic) never does.

I apportion on calories and not on servings. The Strawberry comes in 650 gram containers and the lemon in 750 gram. Making 5 serving in each case, I end up with the same calorie content.

                                                     *  *  *

Another happy outcome: that Reese spread cake I made earlier, and dutifully stored in 16 individual servings in the freezer never freezes at all and is room temperature a few minutes out of the freezer.

                                                     *  *  *

Not that hungry, though, and might just eat fruit salad for breakfast.

                                                     *  *  *

(Muhaha.....!)

Awesome Ride

Should be in production for 2017: the electric VW bus!

Fashion Week

It's Plus Size Fashion Week in London next week. Reitmans is a very
organized Canadian brand on that front; on top of a regular line, which comes in
petite, standard or tall, one can  buy plus size regular or plus size petite.

One can get really crazy shopping all the possibilities. Zenitude lies in figuring who you are for the brand and restricting yourself to what's on offer in that possibility.

Cleanse Mono Diet

author: Erwann Menthéour, Fitnext, France
translation: doxa-louise

FIVE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS TO UNDERSTAND THE MONO DIET

Fitnext clients know this: the mono diet is the first step toward an in-depth detox of one's organism. The imminent passage to autumn (this is equally true in the spring) is the ideal moment to proceed with this cleansing of the body, enabling one to restart on a healthy basis. Yet one must know how to proceed and understand the benefits of this ancestral practice. To help you with your first mono diet, Fitnext is offering some sound advice so that these few days proceed in a serene and harmonious fashion.

1- WHAT IS A MONO DIET?

A mono diet is taking in one and unique food throughout one or many meals. Thus, your digestive apparatus is less taxed, and digestion is faster and less laborious than after a traditional meal. The goal is to give your intestines a rest so that these can better do their work. And very important work at that because, contrary to what one may think, the intestines are not only a transition between what enters and leaves your organism. Their role is much more complex. Along with the kidneys, the liver, the skin and the lungs, the intestines are part of the five principal emunctory systems  of the body. Expressed simply, they are one of the major exit points for toxins. They act as a filter. Yet these filters need to be in good shape.

A mono diet can be done for one meal only but will be of much greater benefit if used for three consecutive days. For those who think this practice may be dangerous or create deficiencies, I have but this to say: do not worry. if the mono diet is carried out correctly, it will have but positive consequences for the organism. Moreover, keep in mind that an anything-goes or 100% industrial diet can be much more damaging.

2- WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A MONO DIET?

Once it is clear that that a mono diet helps put the intestines back in shape, one may wonder: 'Fine, but what are the concrete benefits be for my shape?' A very legitimate concern. First of all, it should be understood that one does not undertake a mono diet to loose weight. This is not the purpose. Indeed, your intestines having less digestive work to do, they will use the available energy to proceed with a major cleansing and eliminate all polluting particles present. Be it heavy metals, putrifying garbage, etc...As a result, you will find new energy and real comfort at the level of the abdomen. No more abdominal bloat! All chances are that your transit will return to normal. But these improvements are only the beginning. Following the three days of mono diet, the idea is to emphasize the following weeks healthy eating, varied, balanced and living. Thus, by offering but good foods to your organism freshly cleaned, your shape will only get better. Your skin and hair should bear witness to this.
3- WHAT TO EAT DURING A MONO DIET?

Fitnext recommends do the diet with apples or grapes. As always, it is much recommended to turn to fruit from bio agriculture to take the detoxification process all the way. In this manner, one avoids ingesting a lot of pesticides. One can also do the mono diet with carrots. Lastly, for those afraid of being racked by hunger, the mono diet is doable with rice. In this case, choose complete and bio rice. nonetheless, whatever the food chosen, it is important to stay hydrated during the mono diet.. It is possible to alternate between good quality water, thyme infusions or even green tea.

4- HOW DOES ON FEEL DURING A MONO DIET?

I will not lie to you, the mono diet is not a particularly easy time. We are used to eating complete meals, often containing starches in great quantity and animal protein. In short, hunger-curbing foods. In the beginning, that first day, the feeling of hunger can be somewhat troubling. Hold tight! Then , the body getting rid of garbage can create feelings similar to those of drug rehab: nausea, headaches, body pain. Lets not exaggerate, this won't be all-encompassing. Each person will react differently. It is however recommended to take on the mono diet in an environment that is soothing.

5- HOW TO TRANSITION BACK FROM THE MONO DIET?

Once the mono diet over, it is especially important not to go back to previous eating habits, or gargantuan meals. There would be a real shock to the organism. Eating again must be done progressively and with quality foods. With concentration on fruit and vegetables, then adding foods such as cereals and pulses to one's menu. Especially important, wait two days before eating animal protein again. And to prolong the benefits of the diet, one stays away as much as possible from industrial foods (pastries, candies, prepared meals, etc...) One keeps to mind that to have a healthy body, nothing can replace a living and varied diet.

Missile

New military tech, from China. This missile travels 10X the speed of sound and is
untouchable. It could sink anything it wants in the South Pacific, where China has
territorial claims. The Achilles' heel: the installation on which the position systems of the missile depends are themselves vulnerable. Oh hai!

Sèche

To be clear, I am putting up this video for information only; I am recommending nothing
and indeed have little idea what this young man is doing. It is interesting, though, that he
has a very European idea of what a day of clean eating is for an amateur body builder,
on a sèche ie cutting.

He is a student, and made this video at his family home.

I was particularly taken with his carbohydrate product, post workout. It is from Sweden,
but has a US distributor in California.
